Research Project Experience

It is indeed a positive learning experience doing the research project with Eugene and Nicholas. Through this project, I have made use of the skills that I have learnt during lessons, such as attending meetings, recording minutes and as well as documenting reports. I have also gained from the knowledge and information obtained while researching on the project regarding the issue of lack of sleep among students.

Doing this project has taught me that one has to be an active listener and be open-minded to others’ suggestions and ideas. Another project mate could have suggested ideas that one has not thought of. This is an important step in building interpersonal relationship as well. Clear communication among us also prevents any misunderstanding. In being a team player, it is important that one cooperates with one another and sticks to deadline set by the group in completing individual task. This helps to prevent any delay in collating everyone’s work. Im glad that we have no problem in doing so. While doing research, it is also important to check the source of information, this is especially so for online research. Usually information from other education institutions and government organizations are more accurate and reliable. Cross-referencing of secondary sources contribute to reliability of the research. In writing the report, adopting the 7 Cs of writing is useful and also getting others to proofread the report indeed uncovered common mistakes that could have gone unnoticed.

With regard to the next team project on oral presentation, I think some principle of effective communication, such as active listening is applicable. In addition, effective oral communication will be especially useful.

No conflict arises in doing the project and everyone was efficient. It is a positive experience doing the project with Eugene and Nicholas.

  • Hi Elaine,

It's good to hear that you had a pleasant working relationship with Eugene and Nicholas. I agree with you that one has to be an active listener and be open-minded to others' suggestion. This is especially important in order to mediate relationships with your working partners. On top of that, I think it'll take some time to understand each others' personality and working styles, which are crucial pointers to working with each other too.

On another point, I feel that it is very important to be a team player in this project. Because time was very tight, it was pivotal that work was divided equally and everybody completed their tasks. Keeping to deadlines is crucial too! :)

  • Hi Elaine,

I agree with you the having an open mind is one of the important aspects to having a successful team. Being open allows us to evaluate and adopt the best ideas that are being presented in a meeting.

Furthermore, it allows the members to integrate well within the group, and to feel more comfortable working with each other.

Being a good team player also ensures that everyone knows their roles and are able to complete their tasks on time. This aspect did not pose a problem in my group, and we are able to accommodate each others working schedule.

  • Hi Elaine!

I have the same sentiment as you that doing this project has allowed us to learn a lot about conducting a research project. How to hold meetings and record minutes are some of the valuable experience and skills learnt. Adopting the 7Cs of effective writing in our report will allow readers to have a better reading experience and eliminate any possibility for misunderstanding due to inappropriate phrasing or language.

I do agree with you that effective communication reduces misunderstandings. It helps to increase the efficiency of the project and improves interpersonal relationships. These valuable skills learnt will be useful when interacting with our friends and families, and also when we step into the workplace.

  • Hey Elaine,

Thanks for making my experience working with you guys so enjoyable, not to mention easy as well.

I appreciate the fact that you guys set datelines and stuck very strictly to it. This made the whole process very smooth and efficient, which led to us finishing the whole project before time. I think this is one of the few rare group projects that i am part of, and is accomplished before the dateline.

Also, we did it with a common goal in mind, that is to finish the project pronto. As such, we supported each other to come up with a piece of work which we were proud of.

    Cheers,
    Eugene

  • hi,
i agree that during a discussion, group members will always have ideas that you have never thought of, it is really true that 3 heads are better than 1.

Working as a team is also important as in the scehdule to stick to and maintian a good interperson relationship with the group members. I'm glad that all of us had some positive learning during this project.

  • Thank you, Elaine, for your post. I can see that you have learned many things from this "positive learning experience". Good!

Do be careful of your tenses. Stick to the past tense if you are relating what happened in the past eg. how effective communication prevented misunderstanding between members. Use the present tense to describe general statements eg. about the importance of active listening.

Am happy that there were no conflicts and that there was effective communication within the group!
